Diwali 2026: Why we’re ditching the Soan Papdi for Handcrafted Art

April 28, 2026 · 7 min read

Ah, Diwali. The season of lights, firecrackers, and the inevitable mountain of Soan Papdi boxes that just get passed from one house to another like a sugary game of hot potato.

We love tradition. But we think Diwali gifting needs an upgrade.

Diwali is a celebration of 'Shubh Laabh' — auspiciousness and profit, yes, but also the beauty of a new beginning. We think a gift should reflect that. Here’s why we’re seeing a huge shift toward handcrafted resin and 3D printed gifts this year.

The 'Personal' Touch in a Festive Season

When you're giving gifts to 20 different relatives or 50 corporate clients, it's easy to go generic. But everyone knows when they've received a 'bulk' gift.

At Dastaan, even our festive orders are handled with care.

For the Home: Resin Coasters Diwali is the time when guests are constantly in and out. A set of our resin coasters — perhaps in deep festive maroons with gold leaf or traditional Rangoli patterns — isn't just a place to put a cup of chai. It’s a conversation starter. It’s art for the coffee table.

For the Modern Pooja Room We've started making 3D printed 'Diyas' (decorative only!) and 'Om/Swastik' wall hangings that use modern geometric patterns. They look incredible when backlit by real lamps or LEDs, creating shadows that traditional clay pieces just can't match.

Corporate Gifting that isn't Cringe

If you own a business, you know the struggle. You want to thank your clients, but you don't want to be the fifth person to send them a 'Diary and Pen' set.

Last year, we did a bulk order for a tech firm in Bangalore. Instead of diaries, we made them custom 3D Printed Cable Organizers with each employee's name on them, combined with a small Resin Evil Eye for their desk.

The feedback was insane. People actually used them. They posted them on LinkedIn. They felt seen.

The Gift of Memories: NFC Frames for Diwali Diwali is when families come together. If you have family members abroad who couldn't make it home, our NFC Photo Frames are a beautiful way to keep them close. - Link the frame to a folder of this year's Diwali celebration. - Send it to your grandmother or your brother in London. - They tap it, and suddenly they’re part of the festivities.

Our Diwali Timeline (Read this!)

Because we are a small studio and everything is handmade, we have a hard cutoff for Diwali orders.

Resin needs time to cure. 3D printers have a finite speed. We don't 'rush' jobs because quality is our brand.

  • Custom Orders: Please place these at least 3 weeks before Diwali.
  • Bulk/Corporate Orders: We start these 2 months in advance.
  • Ready-to-ship Items: We usually have a small stock of our most popular designs that can go out in 48 hours.

Sustainability Matters

One reason we love PLA 3D printing is that it’s much more eco-friendly than mass-produced plastic junk. And because our resin pieces are made to last a lifetime, they don't end up in a landfill a week after the festival.

This Diwali, let's celebrate the makers, the artists, and the people who put their heart into their work.
