Is 3D Printing the Future of Gifting? Our Take from the Studio
May 3, 2026 · 7 min read
When people hear "3D Printing," they usually think of grey plastic parts for a car engine or some high-tech lab. They don't usually think of a birthday gift for their sister or a desk accessory for their new office.
But at Dastaan, 3D printing is our favorite tool. It’s what allows us to say "Yes" to almost any custom request.
Why 3D Printing for Gifts?
The beauty of 3D printing is that it removes the need for expensive molds. In traditional manufacturing, if you want a custom name stand, a factory has to make a mold for that specific name. That costs thousands of rupees and is only worth it if you make 10,000 pieces.
With 3D printing, the 'mold' is just a digital file. We can design your name, your favorite quote, or a specific shape in CAD software and send it to our printers.
Each piece is unique. Each piece is made just for you.
Materials: It's not just 'Plastic'
We get a lot of questions about the material. "Is it flimsy?" "Is it toxic?"
We primarily use two materials in our studio:
1. PLA (Polylactic Acid) This is what 90% of our gift items are made of. The best part? It’s made from fermented plant starch (usually corn). It’s non-toxic and biodegradable under industrial conditions. - The Look: It comes in incredible finishes — Silk Gold, Galaxy Black (with tiny glitters), Marble, and even Glow-in-the-dark. - Best for: Name stands, decorative figurines, and indoor decor.
2. PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) This is the same family of plastic used in water bottles, but modified for 3D printing. It’s much tougher and heat-resistant. - The Look: It has a slightly more functional look, often slightly translucent. - Best for: Keychains that stay on your car keys in the hot sun, or items that need to be dropped without breaking.
The Design Process: How we go from Idea to Object
- The Sketch: You send us a message saying, "I want a stand that says 'Coffee & Code' with a small gear icon."
- The 3D Model: We use professional design software (OpenSCAD or Fusion360) to build a digital version. We send you a screenshot for approval.
- The Print: We slice the model into hundreds of thin layers. Our printers (we love our Bambu Lab machines!) then build it layer by layer. A 10cm name stand can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours to print.
- Post-Processing: We remove any supports, smooth the edges, and sometimes combine it with resin for a 'hybrid' look.
3D Printing vs. Laser Cutting
You might have seen wooden name stands in local gift shops. Those are usually laser-cut. While beautiful, they are flat (2D). 3D printing allows us to create volume. We can make letters that curve, hollow structures, and 'impossible' geometries that a laser or a drill simply cannot reach.
Our Philosophy on Quality
We'll be honest: You can find 3D printed items cheaper on the internet. But there's a catch. Low-quality prints have 'zits', rough layers, and often break easily.
We obsess over our printer settings. We dry our filament (humidity is the enemy of 3D printing in India!), and we discard anything that isn't perfect. When you buy from Dastaan, you're buying a piece that has been monitored for hours to ensure it’s solid and beautiful.
Perfect Use Cases for 2026
- The Modern Desk: Name plaques for new jobs or promotions.
- Corporate Branding: Logos that actually stand on a table instead of being printed on a flat coaster.
- Wedding Favours: Small, geometric shapes that guests can actually use as keychains or decor.
3D printing isn't just about the tech; it's about the freedom to create something that doesn't exist yet.
