Small Objects, Big Stories: The Art of the Resin Keychain
May 2, 2026 · 6 min read
It’s funny. We make large lamps, complex wall art, and smart tech frames. But the item that brings the most smiles — and the most repeat orders — is the humble keychain.
But if you look closely at a Dastaan keychain, you’ll see it isn't 'humble' at all. It’s a tiny, encased world.
Why Resin?
Resin is a liquid that turns into a rock-hard solid. This transition is where the magic happens. While the resin is liquid, we can suspend things in it. Gold flakes, dried rose petals, tiny 3D printed icons, or even a 'floating' name.
Once it cures, it's clear as glass but as tough as plastic. For something that lives in your pocket with sharp metal keys, that’s exactly what you need.
The Dastaan Difference: Custom Molds
If you go to a craft store, you can buy generic 'Alphabet' molds. Many resin artists use these.
We don't.
- Unique Fonts: Our letters have a specific 'Dastaan' look — elegant, bold, and modern.
- Specific Shapes: Want a keychain in the shape of a specific camera lens? Or a certain car? We can design a mold for that.
- No 'Cookie-Cutter' Art: You won't find our specific shapes anywhere else.
The 'Making-Of' (It’s a 48-Hour Process)
A single keychain takes about two days to complete.
- Day 1 (The Pour): We mix the two parts of the resin. We add the pigments (we use a mix of mica powders for shimmer and alcohol inks for transparency). We pour it into the mold.
- The 'De-gassing': We use a torch or a vacuum chamber to get rid of every single tiny bubble. Bubbles are the enemy of high-end resin art.
- Day 2 (The Cure & Finish): After 24 hours, we de-mold the piece. We then sand the back to make it smooth and pour a final 'dome' layer of resin on top. This gives it that professional, rounded, high-gloss look.
- The Assembly: We use high-quality gold or silver-plated hardware. No cheap rings that bend after two uses.
The Evil Eye Craze
Currently, our 'Evil Eye' resin keychains are our #1 seller. In Indian culture, the Nazar Battu is a symbol of protection. By casting the evil eye pattern in resin, we create a modern version of this ancient symbol. It's vibrant, it's deep blue, and it looks stunning when the sun hits it.
Why They Make Great Gifts
- Budget-Friendly: At ₹299, they are the perfect 'small' gift that still feels premium.
- Bulk Orders: We do a lot of these for birthday return gifts and wedding favours. Imagine every guest getting their own initial, handcrafted in the wedding colours.
- Personal Touch: You aren't just buying a 'B' or an 'M'. You're picking the glitter, the base colour, and the hardware.
How to Care for your Resin Art
- Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for weeks (UV rays can eventually fade colors).
- Clean it with a soft microfiber cloth and a bit of water.
- Don't use harsh chemicals like acetone (nail polish remover).
A keychain might be small, but it's something you touch every single day. We think that's a great place for a little bit of art.
